A pair of Louisiana high school athletes are currently the top two vote-getters during the first phase of the High School Rudy Awards. South Terrebonne's Kurt LeBlanc, who suffered a debilitating stroke, and Parkview Baptist's Calob Leindecker, who lost his lower left leg in an accident, are among 101 national nominees for the award.

The High School Football Rudy Awards (www.highschoolrudyawards.com) are intended to "honor high school football players in the United States who best embody the principles of inspirational football legend Daniel 'Rudy' Ruettiger." The Awards measure the size of the player's heart and factor in such attributes as exemplary Character, Courage, Contribution, and Commitment as members of their team. Twenty semi-finalists will be selected to participate in the formal selection process. The field will be narrowed to three finalists with one winner being awarded the High School Football Rudy Award by Daniel 'Rudy' Ruettiger.

The selection committee includes former Saints head coach Jim Mora Sr., Shaun Alexander and Andrea Kramer, among others. The nomination process opened in September and closes on November 30.

Receiving the most "inspire me" votes for a Louisiana athlete so far has been Kurt with 74,252 votes. LeBlanc suffered a brain stem stroke on Sept. 29 and he has not been able to walk on his own since. The junior was set to see playing time this year as a running back.

His recovery was recently chronicled in his hometown newspaper in Bourg, La. Kurt, the middle child of 11 kids, posts on his Caring Bridge journal often.

Calob, who is a senior running back and defensive back, lost his leg in an accident in 2007, but through hard work and support has returned to the football field wearing a prosthetic lower left leg. In a rare feat, Calob participated in a high school game with the prosthetic this season when he served as a holder on an extra point.

Calob has a quite extensive nomination page with video, pictures and letters of support. That support has helped him garner 27,567 "inspire me" votes. He was also recently featured in a video on Our Lady Of the Lake Regional Medical Center's Web site, the hospital where he was treated immediately after the accident. Calob and his mother, Tressy, are interviewed and recount the accident and recovery.

Semi-finalists will be announced December 10 and voting by the Selection Committee and online Fan voting will take place from December 10 through January 31, 2010. The three finalists will be announced February 1, 2010. Finalist voting by the Selection Committee and online Fans will take place from February 1, 2010 through February 19, 2010. A ceremony to announce the winner will be held on March 6, 2010.

The winner will receive a $10,000 academic scholarship and will be presented the High School Football Rudy Award by Rudy Ruettiger at an Awards Ceremony on March 6, 2010. Two runners-up will each receive a $5,000 academic scholarship and Runners-up Award. Each of the twenty semi-finalists will receive a 'Rudy 45' football jersey personally signed by Rudy Ruettiger.
