When the Franklinton Demons, ranked No. 5 overall by PelicanPreps.com, take the field tonight they will have one of the highest-scoring offenses in the country. An informal poll of most of Rivals.com's 40 high school web site revealed that no other team in the nation was scoring points as easily as the Demons.
The Demons, however, face undoubtedly their biggest test tonight in a road game against district rival Salmen, which is ranked No. 9 overall.
Leading the junior-laden Franklinton squad is quarterback Terrance Magee, who is dangerous running out of the thread as well as passing out of it. He has a pair of running backs who can take over games in Josh Robinson and Reggie Wilson. Sprinkle in receivers like Lesean Williams and Vincent Williams and its easy to see why the Demons pile on the point.
The engine, however, is an outstanding offensive line, which include Keenan Wilson (5-9, 235), the guards are junior Chad King (6-2, 240) and senior Christian Wheeler (5-8, 235) and the tackles are junior Vince Norman (6-3, 235) and junior Xavier Jefferson (6-3, 235).
The Spartans recently lost the services of standout quarterback Daniel Sams, who has left the school, but backup and standout receiver Matt Lipham is a more than capbale rplacement. Once the team gets a rythm with him under center, it could be pretty potent as well.
The Salmen defense is stellar thanks to an impressive defensive line that includes Isame Faciane and noseguard Malcolm Pichon. Linebacker Josh Adams is a force, as is cornerback Chrishawn Dupuy.
To add more to this clash, the winner gets at least a share of the District 9-4A crown. And considering these are two of the top Class 4A teams in the state, it could be a preview of a deep playoff showdown.
The Franklinton offense has already achieved seemingly mythical status so far this season, at one point scoring more than 54 points per game. The average is "down" to 53.72 now. But often overlooked is a pretty solid defense led by senior linebacker Joshua Mark. The defense will have it hands full with a pretty potent Salmen offense. Another standout on defense is junior safety Colby Taylor, the youngest of the Taylor brood that has been so kind to LSU's roster.
KEY TO THE GAME: Salmen
Salmen
The Spartans might face an even bigger challenge than they ran up against No. 3 Curtis in the second week of the season. The Demons can score from so many angles, that it is not only going to be important to keep track of all the weapons, the defense is going to have to create turnovers and three-and-outs. No one has been able to effectively do that to date. Producing clock-chewing drive on offense will be important as well.
PelicanPreps Game of the Week Prediction.
As the adage goes, something is going to have to give. Franklinton has been putting up huge numbers, but believe it or not, we think the Demons have not really been able to push pedal to the metal just yet. That's right, the Demons have even more under the hood than they have shown. The Salmen offense will do an admirable job, a will the defense, but in the end Franklinton wins Round 1 of this series ... Franklinton 28, Salmen 14
