In the past four seasons, Redemptorist and Parkview Baptist have clashed six time. And the series is tied in that stretch 3-3. Impressive still is the fact that the average margin of victory has been 7 points.
"You can't really predict whether it will be an offensive shootout or a defensive struggle," Wolves coach Guy Mistretta said. "But you can predict it is going to be a close one."
Redemporist is riding a two-game winning streak after topping the Eagles twice last season. The year before, en route to its 2007 Class 3A state championship, Parkview beat RHS in overtime twice.
But even as good as this rivalry is, this game will mark the first time the two teams have clashed with three players committed to major BCS football powers. Parkview senior athlete Drew Dileo is committed to Michigan while Wolves junior running back Jeremy Hill and offensive lineman La'El Collins are both committed to LSU.
"Yeah, that is unique," Mistretta said. "We've never had a player committed to a major college, but I know they've had an LSU kid, like Darry Beckwith."
Hill and Collins are impressive, but senior quarterback Deuce Coon has been particularly impressive running the offense. And when he's not under center, his three pass receptions this season have all gone for touchdowns. He is one of only two senior starters.
The only question mark for the Wolves has been a young defense. However, they have risen to the challenge in a shootout with Woodlawn-BR and a grind-it-contest with West Feliciana.
Parkview Bapitst is throwing the ball more this season, thanks to second-year starter Brady Wilson's progress this year. And he has a fast offensive line led by Travis Speice and, of course, Dileo, who can score running the ball, catching it or on special teams.
PBS also benefits from several talented players playing key roles on both sides of the ball, like Orrin Fontenot, Joey Fougerousse and Paxton Cook. And also, the amazing punting of Australian foreign exchange student Brad Wing, who is averaging close to 50 yards per punt.
The Eagles are a more dynamic offensive team than they have been in years past, boasting a QB in Brady Wilson that reads defenses well and can pass effectively. He also has a great weapon in Drew Dileo. Being able to do both things -- run and pass -- will be key against a young Wolves defense. The defense will need to keep one of the state's most talented offenses in check. A huge weapon will be punter Brad Wing.
KEY TO THE GAME: Redemptorist
Redemptorist
The Wolves defense has bent, but has not broken yet this season. They overcame adversity when Woodlawn-BR was picking on young DBs and when they had to play assignment football against West Feliciana's option attack. However, they will be facing an offense that has been productive on both fronts, running and passing. RHS' offense will have to take the early lead and keep the pressure up.
PelicanPreps Game of the Week Prediction.
The Wolves' main concern coming into this season was a relatively inexperienced defense. Afterall, the 2008 unit was virtually the same group that started in 2007, which narrowly lost to PBS in the semifinals. Redemptorist has surrendered only five touchdowns in the past five games. PBS counters with a talented, versatile offense that is capbale of scoring quickly or grinding out. But so can the Wolves' offense, and they get the edge at home this time around ... Redemptorist 28, Parkview Baptist 21 (Overtime)
