John Curtis' Joe McKnight has speed, size, strength, versatility and talent.

What he really needs is a U-Haul truck to carry a growing stack of post-season awards.

McKnight, a senior who played running back, wide receiver, defensive back and kick returner for the Class 2A state champions, has added another award to his haul by being named Louisiana's Farm Bureau/Mr. Football for 2006, as selected by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

McKnight previously was cited as the Outstanding Player on the greater New Orleans All-Metro team as well as the LSWA's Class 2A All-State team.

The award, initiated in 1995, was presented to running back
Charles Scott of Jonesboro-Hodge in 2005. McKnight is the third New Orleans-area honoree, joining Jesuit running back Chris Markey in 2003 and East St. John quarterback Ryan Perrilloux in 2004.

In nine regular-season games, McKnight averaged 16.4 yards per carry as a running back and 36.7 yards per reception as a receiver.

In 14 games, he carried 45 times for 709 yards and 14 TDs, an average of 15.7 yards per carry. As a receiver, he caught 24 passes for 735 yards and 13 TDs, an average of 30.6 yards per reception.

McKnight had one interception and 10 tackles on defense.

On special teams, he returned 12 punts for 268 yards and 3 touchdowns, an average of 22.3 yards per return. He returned five kickoffs for a 34.6-yard average. McKnight scored 182 points in 14 games.

As a junior, because of Hurricane Katrina, McKnight started the 2005 season with Class 1A state champion Evangel Christian of Shreveport and completed it with 2A champion Curtis.

Considered one of the premier players in the nation and in Curtis history, McKnight will take part in the U.S. Army All-Star game in San Antonio, Texas on Jan. 6. This past week, he made trips to New York City and to Phoenix, Ariz., to receive national honors and he also appeared on ESPN's Cold Pizza.

"You could certainly put him in the category with the greatest players we have ever had here," said Coach J.T. Curtis. "Visually, he has very good instincts. He has that acceleration, that second gear that not many players have and he is physically strong."

The better to handle all that hardware.
