Keith Mumphery: A special player

SpartanMag.com has been working to track down recruits that were on campus this weekend. In the process we caught up with Coach Jamaal Zanders of Dooly County High School. He gave SpartanMag.com some quotes on his star player <Keith Mumphery that we had to share.

SpartanMag.com has been trying to track down some information on a cornerback prospect named Darqueze Dennard of Twiggs County High School in Georgia. Apparently he officially visited Michigan State this past weekend. Dennard's team played Dooly County High School this fall so we thought we would catch up with Coach Zanders and get some insight on him. While Coach Zanders did provide us with some information on Dennard, it was the quotes on Mumphery that really stood out.

When we asked Coach Zanders how it was that Michigan State initially got involved with Mumphery, he said the following:

"I put together Keith's highlight tape last year and decided to send it out to about a dozen schools. Michigan State was one of the schools I sent it to. I know Michigan State runs a pro-style offense and they have a great tradition of putting wide receivers in the NFL from guys like Andre Rison to Plaxico Burress. I figured a pro-style offense would be the best fit for a wide receiver like Keith. He has always been a big Plaxico fan too. That is why he wears #17."

Coach Zanders is right on the money. When you consider the run of Andre Rison, Courtney Hawkins, Muhsin Muhammad, Derrick Mason, Plaxico Burress, Charles Rogers and Devin Thomas, Michigan State has an incredible track record of putting wide receivers in the NHL. Mason and Muhammad alone have comined for over 1700 catches and 22,000-yards and are still going strong.

Coach Zanders said it did not take long to get a lot of positive feedback about the highlight film.

"After I sent out the film, schools started getting back with me and Keith started getting scholarship offers. Michigan State was one of the first schools to offer, along with Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Wake Forest and Vanderbilt. Florida State was showing a lot of interest too."

We then asked Coach Zanders what makes Mumphery such a good player and why he believes he will have a lot of success in college.

"Keith is a special player," He said. "He is a very disciplined and conscientious young man. He is a hard worker on and off the field, that is why he has a 3.9 GPA. He is polite, honest and has all the qualities you would want in a son. Coach Dantonio called after Keith visited and talked about what a fine person Keith is. Plus Keith has a whole lot of talent as well. He has great athletic ability."

As far as Darqueze Dennard, Coach Zanders did offer some information on the Georgia cornerback prospect.

"He is a very good player. He is really savvy on the field and quick. I do not know how fast he runs the 40, but he can run. He made All-State and his team had a great year. He is a kid who is way under the radar, but he can help a team."

SpartanMag.com will continue to work to get more information on Dennard, we just thought that the quotes on Keith Mumphery should be made public right now. It is a testament to the type of player s Coach Dantonio is bringing to East Lansing.
