First offer 'special' to Lewis

Jameon Lewis made a name for himself this past season quarterbacking Tylertown to the Class 3A State Championship game.

But the 5-foot-9, 175-pounder's future could be on the other side of the ball at defensive back. Last week Lewis received his first scholarship offer from Mississippi State last week and is something he called "special".

"It really is special to me," Lewis said. "They were calling me last week but I was with my dad and my phone didn't have service. So I called them back and Coach Tony Hughes said that they had been calling me all day because they wanted to offer me a football scholarship. I called back the next day and talked to Coach (Dan) Mullen and I got the papers in the mail the other day."

Defensive back is a position of need for the Bulldogs in the 2010 class but even so, the offensive-minded Mullen cannot resist giving Lewis a shot at making plays with the ball before he locks into a position.

"They are really looking at me as a defensive back," Lewis said. "But coach said they were going to try to get the ball in my hands and see what I can do with it."

Lewis made a trip to Starkville during Super Bulldog Weekend to take part in junior day and also watch the spring game in person.
