Sooners in the mix for Louisiana lineman

Tyrell Jacobs stars for back to back defending Louisiana state champion Rummel (LA) high school Raiders. Jacobs has been a force on the defense the last two seasons, while appearing at all positions along the defensive line. Recently the 6-foot-4 senior has seen his height shoot up over two inches in the past nine months, and so has the attention from college recruiters.

"The recruiting process has been good for me", said Jacobs. "Even though I didn't get a lot of attention last year, it has really picked since the season ended."

The Oklahoma Sooners were the latest to offer the standout defensive tackle following the offer from fellow Big 12 conference member Kansas State. Jacobs says that he was surprised by the offer, but feels it was well warranted.

"I just got off the phone with Coach Jerry Montgomery and he said I would be an excellent fit there", said Jacobs. "I like the fact that it is a major program that is used to winning. Coach Montgomery said anything is possible so long as I come in to do work. He expressed to me that the depth chart favors my chances off seeing the field early. I just want a fair shot to let my talents be seen and not sit the bench. Oklahoma is a place that I must see and will be on my list of schools to visit soon."

Jacobs has offers from over 15 schools across the country including rising in-state programs Tulane, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana-Lafayette and Louisiana Tech. The big defensive tackle received his first offer from Tennessee and is very found of the staff in Knoxville. He recently visited and shared a few thoughts about the trip.

"I really like Tennessee because they were my first offer", said Jacobs. "They were straight forward with me and didn't play any games. Coach Gillespie recruited me and he told me that he wanted me to get an education here (Tennessee). My family really enjoyed the visit to there and they were happy with the staff."

Jacobs added that he loved the fact that his first offer was from an SEC school, but it didn't stop the other big conference schools from vying for his services. In addition to the aforementioned in-state schools, Jacobs has offers from California, Navy, UCF, Louisville, Arizona State, Mississippi State, Southern Miss, Arizona, Houston, Georgia Tech and Kansas State.

"After Sept 1st I will visit all my in-state interests since they are the closet in terms of travel", said Jacobs. "I plan to sit down with my parents and come up with dates to visit some of the schools furthest away that I am interested in. I intend on setting my official visits after that."

Jacobs has been pretty quiet on the camp circuit this summer, but that has not stopped him from working tirelessly to get better. Workouts have been underway at Rummel and Jacobs says that he is staying in great condition. He weighed in at 260 pounds and hopes his great conditioning will help build on last year's 70 plus tackle season.
