Louisiana DB is heading to Dallas

The summer is usually a time where upcoming seniors get their tune-ups before putting on their final performances of their high school career. However, with the new early signing day looming in December, many recruits have kicked their recruiting into high gear.

John Curtis (LA) High School standout defensive back, Donald Clay, is the latest in the line of recruits to give his verbal pledge. PelicanPreps.com caught up with Clay to get his take on his commitment to SMU.

Clay became the 9th signee in as many days to verbally commit to the Mustangs. Showing signs of a momentum swing towards some positive strides in Dallas.

“Committing to SMU just felt right and the timing was right”, said Clay. “They had been holding this spot for a while now, so it was just right for me.”

“I took my official visit back in May and I had a pretty good feeling then. It was a beautiful campus and they are building something special. It is something that I want to be a part of. This 2019 class will be really special to the program.”

Clay is one of the top defensive backs in the state and has plethora of offers to choose from. He maintains that his choices were between the SMU and Arizona State.

SMU has made the push in recruiting as well as in facilities. The school has embarked on multiple facility add-ons since 2016 and the recruits have taken notice.

“It’s a lot going on there and the buzz is building towards winning”, said the 3-star defensive back. “The coaches are committed and it’s a great vibe being handed down.”

Although Clay is solidly committee to SMU, there is still a long way to go before the actual signing day. However, Clay and his family insist that they are 100% happy with SMU and have no intention of visiting anywhere else as of now.

Clay also stated that he is being recruited as a safety, but has the tools to cover in open space. He is a solid tackler in the open field and will probably be featured in a lot of blitz packages.

His greatest attribute, according to multiple sources has to be his football IQ. He has the ability to play all over the secondary, which you can watch via the videos below.

Pelicanpreps.com will continue to bring you the latest with Donald Clay as it happens.
