Just hours before national signing day Louisiana Tech received an unexpected piece of to their 2016 recruiting class. Do everything athlete Ceejay Powell of Livonia (LA) told coaches at Louisiana Tech on Monday that he would be taking his talents to Ruston, LA as a preferred walk-on.

Powell was originally committed to play for McNese State, but after a sudden coaching change those plans fell through.

“I had all but wrapped up my recruitment and verbally committed to play for the Cowboys”, said Powell. “Once the coach that recruited me left, it left me kind of stuck out. So I had to start mulling over my options.”

Every other school that offered the speedy athlete prior had already fulfilled their quota at his position. This left Powell searching for a place to call home just days before National Signing Day.

Powell took trips to a handful of schools only to be told that an offer was not in his immediate future.

“Multiple schools wanted me to come and walk-on”, said Powell. “There is nothing wrong with walking on, but I didn’t feel that it was right for me in that moment.”

Powell shared that he always wanted to play FBS level football, but doubt started to creep in about that becoming a reality. Bulldogs’ coaching staff had been in contact with Powell and decided to extend him a chance to become a preferred walk-on and the rest was history according to Powell.

“I knew Sunday after talking with coach Sloan, that Louisiana Tech is where I wanted to be”, said Powell. “They have built an excellent program there and I think that I can help contribute.”

Powell switched to quarterback this past season to help the depth on offense. After buying into what his coaches were selling, Powell accounted for 823 yards passing, 1480 yards rushing and 25 touchdowns combined.

Powell says that players like current Bulldogs’ wide receiver, Trent Taylor, are one of his biggest influences in football. He hopes to make an even bigger impact than Taylor during his time in Ruston.
