Glen Oaks rekindling old magic
Note: The following is one in a 10 part series detailing the teams in the inaugural PelicanPreps.com Super 10 preseason boys basketball poll.
9. GLEN OAKS (Baton Rouge, La.), 25-9, Class 4A
With coach Harvey Adger courtside for his 24th season, even a team that features one starter taller than 6-foot can be considered among the state’s best.
Guard oriented is the only way to describe this year’s Panthers, who made a surprising run to the Top 28 last year and return virtually everyone back from a team that lost in the semifinals to eventual Class 4A runner-up Washington-Marion (Lake Charles, La.), 51-35.
Five starters would have returned, but center Carinell Robinson (6-2, Sr.) suffered a severe broken leg playing football, but he might be able to return late. Leading the team will be Torry Beaulieu (5-10, Sr.), a district MVP last season who fared well over the summer against some of the nation’s top guards in AAU.
Beaulieu teams with Ryan Francis (5-8, Sr.) to give the Panthers an electric backcourt tandem in which both can handle the ball well, hit big 3-point shots and are very active on defense.
Also back is Jacobe’ Shannon (5-9, Sr.) and Troy Cage (6-3, Jr.). Guards Devon Grisby (5-11, So.) and Brandon White (6-0, Jr.) didn’t start last season, but did log a lot of minutes.
Glen Oaks won three straight state titles from 1994 to 1996, but those teams featured size, major Division I-A talent or both. This group might not have any of that, but they are quick and agile.
“We just make adjustments accordingly,” Adger said. “These guys are very resilient. They bought into the system, remained positive and have a good work ethic.”
