Over the weekend, the NCAA announced that the recruiting dead period would be extended. This news ensures that HS prospects across the nation won’t be able to visit college campuses through May 31.

Here is how a few of Louisiana’s top 2022 prospects reacted to the news.

TreVonte Citizen: “The dead period doesn’t really have an effect on me narrowing down my list. It just affects me from actually seeing the schools. Me and my family do a lot of research on schools that I’m interested in. When we’re on the phone with those schools we ask specific questions to get a good feel of their program and how it operates.”

Marlon Gunn: “It has hurt in a way I would say, because when the coaches are talking to us, they’ll tell me about their facilities and they make it sound like a great site to see. So it hurts that we can’t go up to their campuses and see them for ourselves. As far as the recruiting process, just staying in touch with schools gives us time to build a great relationship and through virtual tours it gives us an opportunity to see what to look forward to when the dead period ends and we can actually visit the schools.

As of now, what helps me in my process and how I decide what schools I have interest in is how much each school keeps in contact with me. If we have a good relationship then it’s a possibility that I could attend the school, but I look for how they talk, activities around the school, and if I feel they are truly interested in me or not.”

Jhamal Shelby: “I don’t agree with the choice the NCAA made to extend the dead period because I feel as though when players visit colleges it helps them and their parents decide if it’s a good fit for the player. It also lets players meet coaches in person and really pick up on certain aspects & other things you’ll never find out otherwise. Because of not being able to visit, I won’t really know what I’m getting myself into and it could be hard for me to determine my choice in the schools that are recruiting me. Sometimes me and my parents research different schools that are recruiting me. But for right now, when coaches from the schools call to check up on me on a regular basis, that helps a little in me narrowing down my choices.”

Javae Gilmore: “It has had an impact on my top 10 because I really can’t get a real feeling (of schools) that I want to see.”
