District 5-2A got most of the attention in Sulphur, arriving in the semifinals of the Class 2A softball tournament with three of the remaining four title contenders.
But District 6-2A had the final say. Underdog Pine Prairie, the 6-2A runner-up, defeated a pair of 5-2A heavyweights on the final day of the season, wrapping up its improbable run with a 5-2 victory over defending champion South Beauregard in last month's championship game.
The top two individual awards on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association's Class 2A all-state softball team went to representatives of 6-2A. Pine Prairie's Carolyn Deville was voted Coach of the Year, while Sacred Heart-Ville Platte's Alicia Lafleur is the Outstanding Player on the squad selected by a panel of sportswriters from across the state.
Deville led the Lady Panthers to the big prize, even though they had never competed in Class 2A. Pine Prairie had been a perennial contender in Class B since the mid-1990s, but consolidation in Evangeline Parish bumped the team up two classifications.
Lafleur, a junior, helped Sacred Heart beat out Pine Prairie for the 6-2A title. The Lady Trojans didn't make it back to the state championship game this year, but Lafleur still had a great year. She compiled an overall record of 22-6 and struck out 266 batters, losing to South Beau in the second round of the playoffs.
The Outstanding Player on LSWA baseball squad is Wade Miley of Loranger, a senior pitcher who got it done both at the plate (.478 avg., 14 home runs) and on the mound (10-2, 1.70 ERA). He held off Sacred Heart's Taylor Ardoin (.472 avg., 12 home runs) and Ouachita Christian's Matt Laird (8-2, .444 avg.) to win the award.
The Class 2A Coach of the Year in baseball is Sterlington's Todd Moore, who led the team within a win of the state championship. The Panthers upset top-ranked Sacred Heart in the second round and kept that momentum alive to reach the Class 2A final at Louisiana-Monroe.
As usual, the 2A championship teams collected their share of the spoils. Deville was joined on the all-state team by a trio of Pine Prairie players: third baseman Alex Deville, outfielder Brittney Marcentel and pitcher Alycia McDaniel, who made the team at the utility position. Ouachita Christian ended up with a pair of all-state representatives, with Laird getting company from fellow utility selection Orin Wilson.
Sacred Heart had the most players on the baseball team. Ardoin, an Arkansas signee, was joined by pitcher Shane Ardoin and second baseman Kaygan Jones. Aside from Taylor Ardoin and Miley, the only repeat selection was Oakdale first baseman Jesse Jones.
There was a bigger supply of familiar faces on the softball team. Iota teammates Susan Hebert (infielder) and Brittney Jones (utility) each made the team for the second straight year -- though, this time, at different positions -- while Lafleur and Elizabeth Kaiser of Port Barre were repeat selections at pitcher.
