MANDEVILLE—You look at the Mandeville High football roster and a height and weight jumps off the page.
You don’t see 6-8, 355-pound football players that much on the prep level.
But Mandeville 2021 offensive lineman Mackey Maillho wants to be known not just for how he looks in the program. He continues to strive to become one of the best offensive linemen in the state.
“I have the best coaches in the world that make me the best football player that I can possibly be,” he said. “I’m the type of offensive lineman that is down and dirty and can get in the trenches. I’m pretty tough and don’t try to mess with me. While I can play tackle, I do prefer to play offensive guard.
“I’m very limber and loose, and I can pull very well. That’s why I like to play guard more than tackle. Last year I thought I protected the quarterback well in terms of pass protection. Heading into my senior year I want to improve upon my run blocking and endurance to be able to stay in the game longer. Becoming more and more athletic. I have to drop some baby fat to become the best player I can be. My ideal weight would be 335-340 pounds.”
Skippers offensive line coach Christian Dragna said the sky is the limit for his soon to be senior lineman.
“Can’t teach the size of this young man,” he said. “At 6-8, 355, the college coach is going to get a picture-perfect canvas. Fine tune this kids’ skills and he’s going to be a force on whatever offensive line he ends up. Still has lots of work to do, but has shown lots of growth mentally and physically in the last year.”
The college coaches have already started to take notice of Maillho as he already has offers on the table from South Alabama, Southeastern Louisiana and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (as of March 21st).
“The college coaches that I have been talking to haven’t given any specifics of they want me at a certain spot,” he said. “They do like me at guard, but they want to see where I fit best at their school. I have confidence to improve my feet speed to play tackle if I need to.
“In terms of my recruiting process I’m still in the process of gathering the attention from schools. There is no preference for any particular school at the moment. I want a school that has a good family atmosphere and can offer me the chance to get a quality business degree as well as a good kinesiology program. That’s my major and minor plans. I want a university that supports me.”
In terms of decision timeline, Maillho said he is still far away from making any sort of college decision.
