WEEK 13
(Records through Feb. 12)
(Previous ranking in parenthesis)
1. (1) Northside (Lafayette) 31-1
COACH: Rick LeBato.
TOP PLAYERS: C Perry Stevenson, 6-10, Jr.; F Wendell Thibeaux, 6-2, Jr.; G Randell Daigle, 5-11, Jr.; PG Warren Fusilier, So.; G Telly Broussard, 6-2, Sr.
RECAP: The Vikings have a long list of signature wins, but Northside added to it with a victory at district rival St. Thomas More (51-33) on Friday and then a big win over Thibodaux (70-64) in the LHSAA/LHCSA Hall of Fame Classic at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Saturday. It was also nice set of back-to-back games for 6-foot-10 junior Perry Stevenson and 6-2 Wendell Thibeaux. As usual, they show up for the big games. Against STM, Stevenson and Thibeaux had 17 and 16 points, respectively, to clinch the District 5-4A title outright. Against Thibodaux they had 27 and 23. Stevenson, who is being heavily recruited by LSU, also had 10 blocked shots giving him easily one of his biggest games of the season – especially given the big-game setting. It was important they showed up against Thibodaux, which is ranked No. 8 in the state, because the guards for both teams played straight up, essentially canceling each other out. Then Thibodaux's two top players, Damian Johnson and Brandon Cooks, were limited by foul trouble – Johnson early. Northside also beat Beau Chene 67-49 earlier in the week and were scheduled to play Class 3A No. 1 Teurlings Catholic (Lafayette), ranked No. 9 overall, on Monday night at the Lafayette Cajundome.
LOSS: Gulf Shores Academy (Houston).
LAST 10: 10-0 (13 wins in a row).
2. (2) Brother Martin (New Orleans) 32-2
COACH: John Lavie.
TOP PLAYERS: PG D.J. Augustin, 6-0, Jr.; G Ryan Brock, 6-1, Sr.; G Corey Bloom, 6-4, Sr.; F Courtney Wallace, 6-7, Jr.
RECAP: In its only game of the week, Brother Martin topped rival St. Augustine 70-65. Ryan Brock led Brother Martin with 20 points while D.J. Augustin added 18 and Courtney Wallace 16. A showdown with second-place Jesuit Tuesday night and Holy Cross Friday is all that's left on the schedule.
LOSSES: Northside (Lafayette) and Ridgeway (Memphis, Tenn.).
LAST 10: 10-0 (14 wins in a row).
3. (3) Glen Oaks (Baton Rouge) 30-0
COACH: Harvey Adger.
TOP PLAYERS: G Torry Beaulieu, 5-10, Sr.; G Ryan Francis, 5-10, Sr. (Committed to Louisiana-Lafayette); C Troy Cage, 6-3, Jr.; G Jacobe Shannon, 5-9, Sr.
RECAP: The Panthers scored what is easily its biggest win of the season on Saturday when Ryan Francis' layup at the buzzer went in for a 48-46 win over then-No. 10 Denham Springs in the LHSAA/LHCSA Hall of Fame Classic at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, located on the campus of LSU. Glen Oaks – which has long since passed the school record for consecutive victories – had to overcome Tasmin Mitchell's game-high 26 points and 14 rebounds. The LSU signee was playing on his future home floor in front of 3,264 fans. Francis led the way with 21 points of his own. It was the 19th consecutive time GOHS held an opponent to less than 50 points. Earlier in the week the Panthers topped Bishop Sullivan (Baton Rouge), 46-36, and Belaire (Baton Rouge), 49-41. Francis scored 18 against Belaire and Troy Cage led the way against Sullivan with 13.
LOSSES: None.
LAST 10: 10-0 (30 wins in a row).
4. (5) Washington-Marion (Lake Charles) 28-3
COACH: Mack Guillory.
TOP PLAYERS: F Leonard Washington, 6-6, So.; G Joe Lestrape, 6-3, Jr.; G Jamar Livings, 5-10, Sr.; G Durrell Moreaux, 5-10, Sr.; F Quinton Smith, 6-4, Sr.
RECAP: In their only game of the week, the Chargin' Indians topped league rival LaGrange (Lake Charles), 47-40, on the road. Washington-Marion, which is 6-0 in District 4-4A can clinch the league crown Wednesday with a win over DeRidder, which Washington-Marion beat 65-59 in the first round. Against LaGrange – which will be one of the best third-place teams in the state – Joe Lestrape led the way with 13 points while Leonard Washington added 11 in limited play.
LOSSES: Gulf Shores Academy (Houston), Thibodaux and Leesville.
LAST 10: 9-1 (6 wins in a row).
5. (6) John Ehret (Marrero) 24-3
COACH: Allen Collins.
TOP PLAYERS: G Daymond Burditt, 6-1, Sr.; G Joshua Walker, 6-3, Sr.; G Christian Wall, 6-0, So.; F Darryl Crosby, 6-3, Sr.
RECAP: The Patriots cruised past its two opponents last week, topping West Jefferson (Harvey) 90-47 before lighting up Grace King 89-48. Against West Jefferson the ultra-balanced Patriots' Christian Wall led 11 players who scored with 23 points. Daymond Burditt and Luther Landry had 12 each. Five players reached double figures against lowly 7-21 King, led by Bernard Bradley with 16, Darryl Crosby with 15, Landry 14, Burditt 11 and Porter 11.
LOSSES: St. Paul (Covington), Brother Martin (New Orleans) and Plaquemine.
LAST 10: 10-0 (12 wins in a row).
6. (9) Peabody (Alexandria) 27-2
COACH: Charles Smith.
TOP PLAYERS: G DeAndre Eggins, 6-5, Sr.; F Rodney Jones, 6-5, Sr.
RECAP: The Warhorses exacted a little revenge, beating visiting Leesville 54-39 on Friday, avenging a 78-67 loss to the Wampus Cats. It was a season-low for points for Leesville, whose star Terrance Blake, who scored 33 point the first meeting, did not score a point. It was the 10th time this season Peabody held an opponent to 45 points or fewer. Leading the Warhorse charge was DeAndre Eggins with a game-high 17 points, Rodney Jones 15 and Desmond King 11. It was the 30th straight win at home for Peabody, which kept the chance at a 12th straight district championship alive. The Warhorses also topped Alexandria 70-50 on Tuesday.
LOSS: Bellaire (Houston) and Leesville.
LAST 10: 9-1 (5 wins in a row).
7. (4) Leesville 25-7
COACH: Tracy Reese.
TOP PLAYERS: G Terrance Blake, 6-1, Sr.; F Frank Larry, 6-3, Jr.; G Darryl Joiner, 5-9, Sr.
RECAP: The Wampus Cats hopes for an outright District 3-4A title were dashed when Terrance Blake, suffering from flu-like symptom, was held scoreless and Peabody topped the visitors 54-39 on Friday. Leesville, which was averaging better than 75 points per game, shot just 38 percent in being held to a season low in points and saw a 13-game winning streak come to an end with two games left in the regular season. A win by Leesville would have locked up at least a share of the district crown. Should both teams win out they would share the crown and then have the option at playing a tiebreaker game on a neutral court or flip a coin. Darryl Joiner led Leesville with 15 points on 5 3-pointers while Frank Larry added 10 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocked shots.
LOSSES: Washington-Marion (Lake Charles); Lakeview (Campti); Natchitoches Central; Mansfield; Marksville; Gulf Shores Academy (Houston) and Peabody (Alexandria).
LAST 10: 9-1 (1 loss).
8. (11) De La Salle 27-6
COACH: Troy Holley.
TOP PLAYERS: SG Kevis Anderson, 6-5 (McNeese State); F Trey Rubin, 6-4, Sr.; PG Eddie Williams, 5-7, Jr.; G Van Taylor, 5-10, Jr.; G Kyle Walker, 6-0, Sr.
RECAP: There aren't many teams hotter than the Cavaliers, but they survived a scare Friday from Rabouin (New Orleans), a team they beat by 23 in the first meeting in district. Kevis Anderson had 23 points and Trey Rubin 19 as De La Salle held off a late surge from the 10-16 team. On Wednesday De La Salle cruised post Ben Franklin 78-42. In that one, Rubin went off for 31 and Anderson had 23.
LOSSES: Detrehan (twice); Jesuit (New Orleans); West Monroe, Archbishop Shaw (Marrero); Brother Martin (New Orleans) and Richwood (Monroe).
LAST 10: 10-0 (14 wins in a row).
9. (8) Thibodaux 28-4
COACH: Barry Filce.
TOP PLAYERS: F Damian Johnson, 6-7, Sr. (Minnesota); C Brandon Cooks, 6-7, Sr.; G Karlis Starks, 6-2, Sr.; G Demetrius McCoy, 6-0, Jr.
RECAP: The Tigers are obviously disappointed with the 70-64 loss to No. 1 Northside (Lafayette) on Saturday in the LHSAA/LHSCA Hall of Fame Classic. But it might also be a watershed event as Thibodaux finishes off the regular season and moves on to the playoffs. The reason why Thibodaux doesn't because of a loss is, first, Northside is head-and-shoulders above the rest of the teams in the state, and along those lines, Thibodaux had the Vikes on the ropes. Solid guard play by Karlis Starks, Demetrius McCoy and Steven Steward, who all scored in double figures, neutralized one of Northside's biggest attributes: above-average guard play from the likes of Randle Daigle, Warren Fuselier, Eric Fuselier and Telly Broussard. But Thibodaux's big men of Damian Johnson and Brandon Cooks fell victim to foul trouble and the team in turn fell victim to 6-foot-10 Perry Stevenson (27 points) and Wendell Thibeaux (23). Currently tied in the loss column with Destrehan and Hahnville in district, the Tigers face both teams this week, Hahnville Tuesday and Destrehan Friday. Thibodaux's final three opponents on the regular season are a combined 79-16.
LOSSES: East St. John (Reserve), Terrebonne (Houma), Hahnville (Boutte) and Northside (Lafayette).
LAST 10: 8-2 (1 loss).
10. (12) Teurlings Catholic (Lafayette) 27-4
COACH: Milton Rohm.
TOP PLAYERS: G Troy Young, 6-2; F Luke Aubrey, 6-4, Sr.
RECAP: Teurlings Catholic moves into the top 10 after blasting what has in essence been a pretty weak district this season. Last week the Revels beat Catholic (New Iberia) and destroyed Erath Friday, 86-46. Trey Young had 15 and Harold Regiser 17 for TCHS.
LOSSES: St. Thomas More (Lafayette) (twice), Northside (Lafayette) and St. Paul (Covington).
LAST 10: 10-0 (12 wins in a row).
